Congratulations on deciding to start your journey into medicine at AUC! White Coat Ceremony at AUC takes place on Monday evening after orientation and the start of classes. In this post, I will cover some frequently asked questions to help you prepare.
What is White Coat Ceremony?
White coat ceremony is your official induction into the profession of medicine. Many healthcare degrees have a version of this ceremony.
At AUC’s White Coat Ceremony, you will receive your short white coat and recite the White Coat Oath, reflecting the values of the school and the responsibilities of a medical doctor. Each student will be called on stage in groups of four to don their white coat. Several faculty members and a keynote speaker will also make some remarks welcoming you and your families.
The entire event takes about one and a half to two hours and is in the Auditorium on campus.
Do I have to bring my own white coat?
You do not need to purchase a white coat before flying to the island. The vast majority of students purchase their white coats at the book store.
Some students purchase a white coat and have it embroidered before arriving.
What should I wear?
This is a formal event. Women typically wear dresses, slacks and a blouse, or a skirt. Men typically wear a pair of slacks with a button down shirt or polo.
Guests can dress however they choose.
Who can attend?
Anyone you would like to bring is welcome to attend the ceremony. Many people have family and friends with them. You will have to sit separately during the ceremony but will have opportunities to take pictures before or after.
The school also publishes a live stream so students can share this event with people who are not there in person.
Can my family member “coat”me?
If you have a family member who is a doctor, they can put your white coat on you during the ceremony. Bring them up to the stage with you when it is your turn.
What do I do after the White Coat Ceremony?
Most students celebrate after White Coat Ceremony. Many will take pictures in their new white coat with their friends and family.
I highly recommend going to dinner with your guests or new classmates. This is a time to celebrate!
Thank you for making it this far! Please keep sending me your questions!
